La Super Bowl (uno de los principales campeonatos de fútbol americano que tiene lugar el primer domingo de febrero) es, frecuentemente, el programa más visto de la televisión americana. En 2011, su audiencia llegó a 111 millones de espectadores. Como resultado, muchos anuncios de televisión de una calidad abrumadora, se emiten durante el juego. Suelen ser de grandes marcas como Pepsi o Budweiser, entre otras, y se emiten durante los descansos del partido. Los anuncios de la Superbowl se han convertido en un fenómeno cultural: muchos telespectadores ven el juego solo para presenciarlos.
The Super Bowl has frequently been the most watched American television broadcast yearly. In 2011, the audience was of 111 million viewers. As a result of this, many high-profile television commercials are broadcast during the game, coming from major brands (as Pepsi, Budweiser, etc.) which airs spots during this match. Super Bowl advertisements have also become a cultural phenomenon: many viewers watch the game just to see these commercials. (For more info: Super Bowl Advertising )

And what has this to do with music? Almost every iconic commercial uses a very well-known song. This year, the commercial by Pepsi was this one:









¿Reconocéis la canción? ¿Cuál es su nombre y qué banda la hizo famosa? ¿Os gusta esta versión? ¿Quiénes son las cantantes? ¿Cuántos cantantes o músicos hay en este anuncio (incluso cuando salen sin cantar o actuar)?. Do you recognize the song? What's the name and which band made it a success?. Do you like this cover? Who are the singers? ¿Quién dijo que los instrumentos de orquesta son aburridos?

Este trimestre estamos aprendiendo muchas cosas sobre los instrumentos y, a lo largo de los años, he observado que muchos estudiantes creen que los instrumentos de la orquesta son aburridos. ¿Por qué ocurre esto?. La mayoría nunca han ido a un concierto así que, ¿cuál es la razón? Quizá seamos algo culpables puesto que en los libros de texto aparecen siempre las mismas piezas y de los mismos autores. Incluso si no usas un libro de texto, como yo, todos los CD que recopilan "Lo mejor de la Música Clásica" son recopilatorios de las mismas obras.
All this semester we are learning about instruments and, over the years, I have observed that many students think that orchestra instruments are boring. Why is that?. Most of them have never gone to a concert so, what's the reason?. Maybe we are a little bit guilty as we listen to the same music over and over again: Vivaldi,  Mozart, etc. with the same works, seem to be on every text book. Even if you don't use a text book, like me, every CD with "The best of Classical Music" is a compilation of the same works.  


De todos modos, en esta entrada vamos a intentar cambiar eso. :) Os traigo diferentes instrumentos de la orquesta usados en música urbana. Los instrumentos evolucionan cada siglo y ¡lo están haciendo en este momento!
Anyway, here we are to try to change that. :) I'm presenting you different orchestra instruments used with urban music. Instruments evolve every century and they're doing it right now!!. 


Aquí tenéis una canción muy conocida de Muse que se llama "Supermassive Black Hole", que se incluyó en la banda sonora de la película Crepúsculo y en el episodio "Hunted" de la serie de televisión Supernatural (para más información "Supermassive Black Hole"). En este caso, lo vais a ver interpretado por dos violonchellos y la colaboración de Naya Rivera, más conocida por su personaje de Santana en la serie Glee.
Here you have a very well-known song by Muse called  "Supermassive Black Hole" which was included in the soundtrack of the film Twilight and in the episode "Hunted" of the TV show Supernatural (for further information "Supermassive Black Hole"). In this case, it's performed with two cellos and it features Naya Rivera, best-known for her character Santana on the TV show, Glee.









¿Qué pensais de esta versión? ¿Os gusta? ¿Qué versión preferís: la original o esta? ¿Por qué? Contádmelo en los comentarios. Si hubiérais escuchado la canción sin saber qué instrumentos se habían usado, ¿habríais adivinado que había dos violonchelos? ¿Son eléctricos o no? ¿Cómo lo sabéis? ¿Lo sabríais sin mirar el vídeo?

Otro ejemplo de creatividad y uso alternativo de instrumentos tradicionales es David Wong. Es un violinista norteamericano que conocí a través de Twitter. Está haciendo un gran trabajo enseñando a la gente las posibilidades de un violín. En este vídeo que he elegido, podéis ver cómo, con un simple violín, se puede crear una obra completa usando bucles (o "loops"). ¡Es increíble!
Another example of creativity and an alternative use of traditional instruments is David Wong. He's an American violinist who I knew through Twitter. He's doing a great job by showing people the possibilities of a violin. In this video that I've chosen, you can see how, with a single violin, you can create a complete work by using loops. It's amazing!!

"Clocks" de Coldplay para flauta y piano

Esta va a ser una entrada cortita, para mostrar lo que mis alumnos de 2º de Bachillerato son capaces de hacer. Hoy han interpretado "Clocks", de Coldplay, tras un solo día de ensayo. He utilizado una partitura que encontré en internet y la he modificado un poco (añadiendo más voces). El resultado es lo que podéis ver. Espero que os guste.
This is a short podcast to show what my students of 2nd of Bachillerato are able to do. Today, only after one day of rehearsing, they have performed "Clocks", by Coldplay. I have used a score I found on the Internet and I had modified it a little bit. The result is what you can see. Hope you like it.

Aniversario de "The Beatles"

Como sabréis, The Beatles fueron un grupo de rock inglés, que comenzó su andadura en Liverpool (Inglaterra). Tocaron muchos géneros musicales diferentes en su carrera, incluyendo partes clásicas, de rock psicodélico y música pop. Hasta el año 1962 no consiguieron su primer gran éxito. En noviembre de ese año, su canción "Please please me" alcanzó el número 1 en las listas de éxitos británicas. Ese es el motivo por el que este año se celebra su 50 aniversario. La canción sonaba así (es una interpretación en directo):
As you may know, The Beatles were an English rock band, started in Liverpool (England). They used parts of many music genres through their career, including classical, psychedelic rock and pop music. They did not have their first hit until 1962. In November 1962 their song, "Please Please Me", reached the number 1 position on the British charts. That's why, this year, we're celebrating their 50th Anniversary. The song sounded like this (this is a live performance):








 No hay duda de la influencia de The Beatles en la historia de la Música Urbana. Puedes ir a casi cualquier sitio y los conocerán. Ese es el motivo por el que T-mobile (una compañía de comunicación de móviles) eligió "Hey Jude", otra canción de los Beatles, para realizar un karaoke gigante donde todo el mundo que estaba en Trafalgar Square (Londres) en ese momento, en el año 2009, pudo cantar de forma conjunta. Puedes sentir la felicidad de todos. Es mágico!!
There's no doubt about the influence of The Beatles in the History of Urban Music. You can go almost everywhere and they'll know this band. That's why, T-mobile (a mobile communication's company) chose "Hey Jude", another Beatle's song, to make a giant karaoke where everybody who was at Trafalgar Square (London) at that moment, on 2009, could sing together. You can feel the happiness of everyone. It's magic!!
