Los musicales: Chicago

Uno de los contenidos que se tiene que trabajar en la clase de música es el del Musical. El Musical es una forma teatral que combina canciones, diálogos hablados, actuación y danza. Se distingue de la ópera porque, al contrario que en esta, la parte musical es igual de importante que la dialogada, el movimiento y otros elementos varios. El musical moderno occidental surgió durante el siglo XIX (para saber más, Musical). Para aprender sobre este tema, mis estudiantes tenían que elegir un número de un musical e interpretarlo. Después de eso, analizaríamos cada parte: coreografía, baile, canciones, etc.
One of the contents that we have to work in the Music classroom is the musical theatre.The musical is a form of theatre that combines songs, spoken dialogues, acting and dance. It can be distinguished from the opera because of the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. The modern Western musical theatre emerged during the 19th century (see more at Musical Theatre). In order to study all of this, my students had to choose an act of a musical and perform it. After that, we'd analyse each part: coreography, dancing, singing, etc.








Un grupo de alumnos de 2º de Bachillerato decidió elegir el musical Chicago. La historia se ambienta en la época de la Ley seca en Chicago y es una sátira sobre la corrupción en la administración de la justicia criminal y sobre el concepto del "criminal famoso" (que aún existe). Chicago está basado en una obra homónima de 1926 escrita por la periodista Maurine Dallas Watkins, que se inspiró en criminales sobre los que escribió profusamente. (Para saber más, visitad  Chicago, el musical ) No sé si alguna vez habéis visto el número de "Cell Block Tango" pero, si no es así, estoy segura de que os va a encantar.
A group of my students of 2nd of Bachillerato decided to choose the musical Chicago. This musical is set in prohibition-era in Chicago and it's a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of "celebrity criminal" (still existing). Chicago is based on a play of the same name from 1926 written by the reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, based on criminals she reported on. (To know more visit Chicago, the musical) I don't know if you are familiar with the "Cell Block Tango" but, in case you don't, I'm sure you'll love it!

Los instrumentos musicales a lo largo de la Historia

Hay muchas formas de estudiar la historia de la Música. Este año he decidido que mis alumnos podrían entrar en contacto con ella a través de los instrumentos. Cuando tienes que analizar una audición, una buena manera de conseguir pistas sobre la época, es escuchar los instrumentos que se incluyen en la pieza.
There are many ways to study Music History. This year, I decided that my students could get in touch with it through instruments. When you have to analyse an audition, a good way to find a clue about the epoch is listening to the instruments included in one piece.


Decidí retar a mis alumnos de la siguiente manera: tenían que hacer una presentación en Internet, usando Wix, que tratara sobre un período histórico determinado, su música y sus instrumentos, tanto los que se usaban como los que dejaban de hacerlo. 
I decided to challenge my students: they had to do a presentation on the Internet, using Wix, and it should be about a certain history period, its music and the instruments used as well as the ones who weren't used anymore.

I hope you see the applications of this knowledge. You can use it to analyse auditions by finding out the instruments and then, by learning the most important instruments in the Middle Ages, Romanticism, etc., you'll be able to guess the historic period. ¿Quién dijo que los instrumentos de orquesta son aburridos?

Este trimestre estamos aprendiendo muchas cosas sobre los instrumentos y, a lo largo de los años, he observado que muchos estudiantes creen que los instrumentos de la orquesta son aburridos. ¿Por qué ocurre esto?. La mayoría nunca han ido a un concierto así que, ¿cuál es la razón? Quizá seamos algo culpables puesto que en los libros de texto aparecen siempre las mismas piezas y de los mismos autores. Incluso si no usas un libro de texto, como yo, todos los CD que recopilan "Lo mejor de la Música Clásica" son recopilatorios de las mismas obras.
All this semester we are learning about instruments and, over the years, I have observed that many students think that orchestra instruments are boring. Why is that?. Most of them have never gone to a concert so, what's the reason?. Maybe we are a little bit guilty as we listen to the same music over and over again: Vivaldi,  Mozart, etc. with the same works, seem to be on every text book. Even if you don't use a text book, like me, every CD with "The best of Classical Music" is a compilation of the same works.  


De todos modos, en esta entrada vamos a intentar cambiar eso. :) Os traigo diferentes instrumentos de la orquesta usados en música urbana. Los instrumentos evolucionan cada siglo y ¡lo están haciendo en este momento!
Anyway, here we are to try to change that. :) I'm presenting you different orchestra instruments used with urban music. Instruments evolve every century and they're doing it right now!!. 


Aquí tenéis una canción muy conocida de Muse que se llama "Supermassive Black Hole", que se incluyó en la banda sonora de la película Crepúsculo y en el episodio "Hunted" de la serie de televisión Supernatural (para más información "Supermassive Black Hole"). En este caso, lo vais a ver interpretado por dos violonchellos y la colaboración de Naya Rivera, más conocida por su personaje de Santana en la serie Glee.
Here you have a very well-known song by Muse called  "Supermassive Black Hole" which was included in the soundtrack of the film Twilight and in the episode "Hunted" of the TV show Supernatural (for further information "Supermassive Black Hole"). In this case, it's performed with two cellos and it features Naya Rivera, best-known for her character Santana on the TV show, Glee.

Otro ejemplo de creatividad y uso alternativo de instrumentos tradicionales es David Wong. Es un violinista norteamericano que conocí a través de Twitter. Está haciendo un gran trabajo enseñando a la gente las posibilidades de un violín. En este vídeo que he elegido, podéis ver cómo, con un simple violín, se puede crear una obra completa usando bucles (o "loops"). ¡Es increíble!
Another example of creativity and an alternative use of traditional instruments is David Wong. He's an American violinist who I knew through Twitter. He's doing a great job by showing people the possibilities of a violin. In this video that I've chosen, you can see how, with a single violin, you can create a complete work by using loops. It's amazing!!

Análisis de una obra musical

Una de las cosas que enseñamos en las clases de Música es cómo analizar una partitura o audición. Aunque el proceso es bastante similar, hay algunas diferencias.
One of the things we try to teach in Music lessons is how to analyse an score or an audition. Although the process is quite similar, there are some differences. 





Para guiar a mis alumnos, he hecho este esquema con una app muy interesante llamada Simplemind, que es gratis. Si pulsáis sobre la foto de arriba, podéis acceder a la "apple store" y conseguirla. Aunque no está pensada para explicaciones muy largas, creo que es un recurso muy útil. Tengo que dar las gracias a Mª Jesús Camino, ya que fue la primera que me habló de ella. Aquí lo tenéis:

Espero que lo encontréis útil a la hora de organizar las ideas antes de analizar una partitura. Recordad, como siempre os digo, que antes de enfrentarse a una partitura es importante ir paso a paso y tomárselo con calma. No es nada difícil. :) Ya sabéis que espero vuestros comentarios.

Esta entrada no va a ser muy larga. Es para haceros saber que mi querida Mª Jesús Camino, a la que conocéis porque hablo mucho de ella, ha escrito un maravilloso artículo (como siempre) en "Educa con TIC". La razón por la que os cuento esto es porque en él, habló de nuestro trabajo. Si digo que Mª Jesús es mi mentora, no os desvelo nada nuevo, pero podéis imaginar que estoy muy contenta de que haya incluído "Soy un compositor de los siglos XX y XXI" entre las múltiples grandes ideas para enseñar Historia de la Música de una forma divertida, que podéis encontrar en su artículo (pinchad en la foto para leerlo completo):
This post is not going to be very long. It's to let you know that my beloved Mª Jesús Camino, who you all know because I talk about her all the time, has written a wonderful article, as usual, in "Educa con TIC". The reason why I'm telling you this is because she talked about our work. Como sabéis, la música es una asignatura muy importante y las artes, en general, son una de las mejores maneras de aprender y desarrollar nuestra creatividad. Por este motivo, muchos profesores vamos a trabajar diferentes asignaturas a través del Arte y la Música. En los próximos meses, en este blog, veréis diferentes entradas en las que se relacionará a la Música con la Historia, Literatura, etc. :) Tengo que agradecer a Inma Contreras, la artífice de esta nueva idea, el habérmela dado a conocer y el ser tan motivadora. As you know, Music is a very important subject and Arts, in general, are one of the best ways to learn and develope our creativity.
