Sia Bonga

Cantar es una de las actividades más hermosas que puede hacer el ser humano. Interpretar en grupo te hace sentir seguro, comprendido, lleno de sentimientos y completamente feliz. Por este motivo pienso que todo el mundo debería cantar. 
Singing is one of the most beautiful activities the human-being can do. Performing as part of a group makes you feel safe, understood, plenty of feelings and, definetely, happy. That's why I think everybody should sing.



Empecé a cantar cuando era una niña en casa y, en cierto modo, aprendí del modo en que lo hacen los africanos. imitando a mis padres e intentando crear voces intermedias a las que ellos estaban interpretando. Y funcionó!!.Después de eso fui al Conservatorio y tenía una asignatura llamada "Canto coral", en la que aprendí cómo se cantaba al estilo occidental, con partituras, reglas y disciplina. No me gustó demasiado, pero el resultado final seguía siendo satisfactorio.
I started singing when I was a child at home. In a certain way, I learnt to sing the way African people do: by imitating my parents and trying to create different voices in the middle of theirs. It really worked!!. After that, I went to the Conservatory and I learnt "Choir Chant" in the Western style, with scores, rules and discipline. I didn't like it that much, but the final result was very rewarding too.


Ese es el motivo por el cual, cuando se trata de cantar, intento que mis alumnos aprendan de forma orgánica, porque creo que se sentirán mejor y que comprenderán la música de otra manera. Cantar con partituras puede ser interesante también, de vez en cuando, pero yo intento hacerlo a la "manera africana".
That's why, when refering to singing, I try my students to learn the organic way, because I think they can feel better and they're going to undertand music in a different way. Singing with scores may be interesting too, from time to time, but I try to do it "the African way".


Aquí tenéis a 1º de Bachillerato cantando "Sia Bonga", una canción africana. Hay muchas versiones de "Sia Bonga" de distintos países como Namibia, Sudáfrica, Gambia, etc. Nosotros interpretamos una de ellas:
So here we have the 1st of Bachillerato singing "Sia Bonga", which is an African song. There are many "Sia Bonga" songs from different countries como Namibia, South Africa, Gambia, etc. We are going to perform one of these versions:









Qué bien suenan, ¿verdad? Aprovechando la situación, me gustaría abrir un debate sobre la diferencia entre las interpretaciones corales que se hacen en Africa y en Occidente. Por eso, voy a compartir dos canciones cantadas por dos coros distintos. En los comentarios, podéis decirme similaritudes y diferencias entre ellas.
They sound great, don't they?. Taking advantage of the situation, I'd like to open a discussion about the difference between African and Western performances of Choir Music. That's why I'm going to show you two songs performed by different choirs. In the comments, you can tell me the similarities and differences between them.

Llegó el fin de curso

Esta entrada es difícil para mí, porque incluso sabiendo que en Septiembre estaremos de vuelta, acabar un curso escolar es una mezcla de muchos sentimientos. Por un lado, te sientes muy cansado después del trabajo, los proyectos y todas las cosas que has hecho con tus alumnos y por tu cuenta. Por otro, ya estás pensando en el próximo curso, estás lleno de ideas y no puedes esperar a empezar con ellas.
This pods is difficult for me to do, because even knowing that we'll be back in September, finishing a scholar year is a mixture of many feelings. In one hand, you feel really tired after all the work, projects and things you've done with your students and by yourself. On the other hand, you're already thinking on next scholar year, you are plenty of ideas and can't wait to start with them.



Tengo que decir que este año (para mí el año va unido al año escolar, no al que comprende de Enero a Diciembre) ha sido uno difícil pero emocionante. A pesar de los recortes en Educación realizados por el Gobierno (que puede que siga haciendo), lo cual nos lo está haciendo pasar francamente mal, los profesores que amamos nuestro trabajo hemos seguido haciendo lo que más nos gusta: educar a las personas para que sean más sabias y mejores seres humanos. Además, este año empecé este blog, que ha sido todo un reto.
I have to say that this year (for me the year is the scholar year, not the one from January to December) has been a difficult but exciting one. Despite all the cuts in the budget of Education that the Government has been doing (and maybe will continue doing) which has given us, the entire education community, a rough time, the teachers who love our work have continuing doing what we like the most: to educate people so they can be wiser and better persons... Besides, this year I started this blog, which has been a great challenge for me.



Por este motivo, quiero decir adiós con dos vídeos. El primero pertenece a TED. Por si no los conocéis, TED se dedica a dar conferencias sobre diversos temas promovidos por una ONG llamada Sapling Foundation y su objetivo es el de propagar "ideas que merecen la pena". Creen que las ideas pueden cambiar el mundo. Ésta en particular, trata sobre la Música Clásica y la idea equivocada que tienen algunas personas de que "no tienen oído", que usan para justificar su desconocimiento de la misma. Espero que os guste. Merece la pena. Agradezco a Miguel Gil el haberlo compartido en Twitter. Aunque cada semana veo algunas de estas charlas, es imposible seguirlas todas. 
That's why I want to say goodbye with two videos. The first one belongs to TED. In case you don't know them, TED is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate "ideas worth spreading". They believe ideas can change the world. This one is about Classical Music and the wrong idea of having a death tone that some people use to justify their ignorance about this matter. Hope you like it. It's really worth it. I want to thank Miguel Gil to share it on Twitter. Though every week I watch a few of them, is impossible to watch them all!









El otro es una despedida que hicieron mis alumnos de tutoría. Tengo que decir que estoy muy triste porque el año que viene no seré su tutora (no sé por qué pero, en 6 años, al Departamento de Música sólo se le han asignado tutorías de 3º y 2º). Me han enseñado algo nuevo cada día y me siento muy afortunada de haber tenido el honor de guiarlos en el camino durante este año. Por eso me emocioné mucho cuando me dijeron que tenían una sorpresa para mí. Usando las Nuevas Tecnologías, como hemos estado haciendo este curso, han hecho este vídeo tan tierno. Os quiero chicos!!. Gracias por el reconocimiento. 
The other one is a goodbye made by my tutorship students. I have to say I'm really sad because next year I won't be their tutor (I don't know why but, in 6 years, the Music Department has only be tutoring students of 2nd and 3rd grade). They have taught me a new thing everyday and I have felt very lucky to have the honor to guide them along the way this year. I was really excited when they told me they had a surprised for me. Using New Technologies that we have been working on, they made this adorable video. I love you all!!. Thanks for the recognition.







Trabajo final del Taller de Creatividad Musical

En el Taller de Creatividad Musical, hemos creado música durante todo el curso. Hemos cantado, hemos tocado y hemos hecho adaptaciones de letras, del inglés al castellano. Todo esto, intentando ser más creativos y acercarnos más a la música.
In the "Musical Creativity Workshop", we have been creating music during the whole course. We have sung, we have played and we have made adaptations of English lyrics to Spanish. All of this, trying to be more creative and getting closer to music.


Como proyecto final, Alejandro y su amigo Vicente han compuesto esta canción llamada "Frío amanecer". Se hacen llamar Spring's Disasters (Desastres de la primavera) y esta canción es del tipo balada. La música y las letras son originales de ellos y estoy muy impresionada con el trabajo que han hecho. Aquí los tenéis:
As a final project, Alejandro and his friend Vicente have composed this song called "Frío amanecer". They called themselves Spring's Disasters and this is kind of a Ballad. The music and the lyrics are totally theirs, so I'm really impressed by the work they've done. Here you have them:

Evaluación compartida en 1º de Bachillerato

Como os comenté en clase, vamos a evaluar a nuestros compañeros. Parece que evaluar es algo muy difícil, pero no es así. Juzgamos cosas continuamente: qué ropa nos gusta, o no; que música nos hace sentir mejor, qué tipo de personas queremos que sean nuestros amigos.. En todos estos casos, somos conscientes de los parámetros a considerar para tomar esas decisiones. Lo mismo ocurre aquí.  
As I told you in the classroom, we are going to evaluate our colleagues. It seems like, evaluating someone is really diificult, but it's not. We judge things all the time: what clothes we like or not, what music makes us feel better, what kind of people we want to be our friends... In all these cases, we are aware of the parameters we consider to make the decission. The same happens here.


En el siguiente wix, tenéis cuatro aspectos a considerar. A la hora de enfrentarnos a cada uno, tenemos que preguntarnos: ¿Sería yo capaz, después de leer y escuchar el wix, de explicar cada uno de ellos? ¿Me gusta cómo se han presentado? ¿Es fácil de entender? ¿Los ejemplos usados son buenos?

Como sabéis, Eurovisión es un festival anual en el cual, los participantes son miembros activos de la Unión de Radiodifusión/Televisión Europea. Lo que más me gusta de este concurso es que todos los artistas actúan en vivo. Este año, la canción española era "Quédate conmigo", interpretada por Pastora Soler. Aquí podéis escucharla:
As you know, Eurovision Song Contest is an annual festival in which the competitors are active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. The thing I like the most about this contest is that all the artists perform their songs live. This year, the Spanish song was "Quédate conmigo" by Pastora Soler. Here you can listen to it:







Mis estudiantes y yo pensamos que es una canción bonita, así que decidimos cantarla hoy. Éste es el resultado. Espero que os guste. Tengo que decir que hay muy buenas voces entre los alumnos de 3º D. Esta canción estará, también, en Kantaconmigo. :)
